Pilau Rice Recipe

Ingredients: Serves 4
  • 2 Cardamom Pods
  • ¾ teaspoon Cumin seeds
  • ½ teaspoon Coriander seeds
  • 1 tablespoon Ground Nut oil
  • 1 Finely Chopped Onion
  • 400ml Basmati Rice (Use measuring jug)
  • 600ml Boiling Water (Always 1.5x the volume of Rice)
  • 1 Cinnamon Stick (1 Inch piece)
  • 1 Bay Leaf
  • 1 teaspoons Salt

Method:

Crush cardamom pods, cumin seeds and coriander seeds using a pestle and mortar. Add the spices (including the pods) to a warmed frying pan and turn the heat up high to dry roast them. This will take about 1 minute and will draw the flavour out of the spices.

Add 1 tablespoon of groundnut oil and 1 small finely chopped onion and fry for about 3 minutes, until the onion is lightly tinged brown.

Add the rice to the pan. Turn the grains over until they are nicely coated and glistening with oil. This helps to keep the grains separate.

Then add the boiling water to the pan. Stock is an excellent alternative, particularly if the rice is to be served with chicken (use chicken stock, do not use stock cubes)

Add the cinnamon stick, bay leaf and salt. Once the hot liquid has been added, stir only once as you don't want to break the delicate grains – this releases the starch and gives sticky rice, spoiling it utterly.

Put the lid on and turn the heat down to its lowest setting. Then leave it alone, once the lid is on. Give white rice 15 minutes and brown rice 40 minutes, overcooking will spoil it. The best way to test if it is cooked is simply to bite a grain. Another way is to tilt the pan and, if liquid collects at the edge, it will need a couple more minutes.

When the rice is cooked, remove the lid, turn the heat off and place a clean tea cloth over the pan for 5-10 minutes. This will absorb the steam and help keep the grains dry and separate. Just before serving, use the tip of a skewer or a fork to lightly fluff up the grains

How to calculate your bb/100 or PTBB/100?

If you don't know how to calculate your bb/100 or PTBB/100 then this post will help you.

bb/100 is a measure of win rate and is the big blinds per hundred hands played.

PTBB is Poker Tracker Big Bets and is also a measure of win rate and equals 2x the bb figure or half the bb/100 figure.

If I create an example we can see how to calculate the figure.

The following numbers are to be used:

8000 Hands
$0.50 - NL50 limit bb as a decimal
$265 - Winnings for the day

First calculate the number of big blinds won:
265/0.5 = 530 bb

Secondly calculate the sets of 100 hands:
8000/100 = 80

Finally calculate the bb/100:
530/80 = 6.62 bb/100

To calculate the PTBB/100
6.62/2 = 3.31 PTBB/100

A quicker method to work out either the bb/100 or PTBB/100 is:

(Winnings / # of hands) * 100 / bb or
(Winnings / # of hands) * 100 / BB

I wish I could win at 6 bb/100 and not 0.6bb/100, lol.

Does your hair grow faster than your fingernails?

An interesting question came up on the million pound drop yesterday.

Which grows faster? Your hair or fingernails?

Your hair grows about 150mm a year.

Your fingernails grow 3 times slower at around 50mm per year.

Your toenails grow about 12mm a year.

The only parts of your skin that are not covered with hair are your lips, the palms of your hands and the soles of your feet

Fast Food Baby

child obesity Biggest Health Issue: Child Obesity
If you get the chance to watch the BBC documentary called Fast Food Baby you will probably be shocked as to what some parents are feeding their kids.

I'm not at all surprised at the state of the UK's obesity crisis with this attitude to eating that exists.

Sadly I don't think the situation will get better any time soon. If anything it will get worse.

On TV yesterday was a 51 stone woman from America whose ambition in life was to get to 60 stone, lol. Ridiculous.
